AUTHOR NAOMI CHAPMAN

Here is an exert from Bathroom Strangler:

Tim Thompson, aka The Bathroom Strangler sat back and watched an older gentleman who looked about forty walk to the bathroom aided by a cane.  The old man was fragile looking, thin, and bald, probably in his sixties.  He thought the old man would be an easy kill.  He couldn’t help it but every time he saw someone he wondered if they would be an easy kill.  It was just a bad habit that never seemed to go away no matter what he did, not that he really tried to make it go away.

He took a drink of his Budweiser and looked away.  He sat alone at a table in the middle of the crowded noisy bar, Jake’s Bar and Grill.   A lot of the usual people were there.  He saw Barb, Cole, and Kristen.  They were the ones he spoke to the most while he was there.  There was this older guy, tall and thin with gray hair that always came in and drank.  This one overweight chick with short, red, curly hair was there also and younger kid that was a regular.  He didn’t look like he was even old enough to drink.  He was always ready to fight someone.  All the alcohol he consumed either made him crazy or feel invincible.

Tim had been going there for about five years now.  He went pretty much everyday to drink, get away, hang out, or play pool.  He just liked the place.  It wasn’t nothing special.  It was just a small bar, one of several in town.  It was usually busy, loud, and smoky.

Tim had gone to a few bars before Jake’s and they all played country music.  That drove Tim crazy.  He couldn’t stand country music.  He wanted to hear rock and roll.  Jake’s played rock and roll all the time.

Cole went to Jake’s all the time also.  That was where they met and became friends.  Tim had seen Cole at Jake’s a few times but they never really talked.  Then one night Cole got into a fight.  There were two huge guys on him kicking the shit out of him and no one bothered to help.  Everyone just watched.  He was getting beat up badly.  Even though they never spoke, he seemed like a nice guy so Tim jumped in.  Together Tim and Cole kicked ass.  To thank Tim, Cole bought him a beer.  After that night no one messed with Tim or Cole.  Everyone knew Tim would jump in and help Cole and Cole would do the same for Tim.

Cole was about six foot, heavier than Tim, but not fat.  He was bald and had five or six tattoos, mostly on his arms.  He had brown eyes, a mustache, and kind of looked mean but he was a nice guy.  Cole kind of looked like a biker, but he wasn’t.

He and Tim weren’t the best of friends or anything.  They only hung out at the bar.  Cole wasn’t a criminal like Tim.  He worked at a factory.  He was single; which was why he hung out at the bar and drank most nights.  Tim and Cole were both good at darts and pool.  They liked playing pool and darts together.  They didn’t talk about what either of them did.  Tim never mentioned any of his criminal activities because he wasn’t sure if Cole would turn him in.

Kristen became Cole’s girlfriend.  Cole had seen Kristen around a lot, but never got up the nerve to talk to her or buy her a drink.  Tim offered to talk to her for Cole, but Cole didn’t want him to.  He was a little shy around women.  Tim thought that was funny considering his appearance.  He didn’t dare make fun of Cole about it because he knew Cole could fight.

After a while Cole started dating Kristen.  Kristen was pretty.  She was short, thin, Mexican, and had long straight black hair.  Tim recalled the day Cole and Kristen first talked to each other.  Cole finally got up the nerve to buy her a drink and ask her to dance.  Tim watched proudly from a table drinking a beer as the two of them danced.  When their dance was over, she followed Cole to where Tim was sitting.  Cole introduced them to each other.  Then she joined Cole and Tim at the table and had a beer with them.

Tim remembered how Cole kept staring at Kristen and smiling like a school boy in love.  He remembered laughing at him thinking he was crazy, but they seemed to like each other so Tim was happy for them.

Then there was Barb.  Tim also met her at Jake’s.  Barb was tall and thin.  She had a really nice body and large breasts.  She had blue eyes and her dirty blond hair was long and wavy.  Tim had spotted her the first time he walked into Jake’s.  She was there with some old, chubby man that had a beard.  Tim never said a word to her, but he did check her out.  He contemplated killing the old man, but didn’t yet.

One night as Tim was walking to the bathroom he and Barb bumped into each other.  She smiled politely.

            “Sorry,” he said.  “Excuse me.”

“Buy me a drink and you are forgiven.”

Tim smiled.  That was the easiest he was ever going to be forgiven for doing something.  He liked her, especially the way she thought.

“I’ll be back in five minutes.”

            “I’ll be at the bar.”

Tim nodded as he hurried into the bathroom.  He took a quick piss, washed his hands, and exited the bathroom.  As he stepped out of the bathroom he looked toward the bar.  Sure enough she was waiting for him.  He smiled as he headed for the bar.  He sat down beside her.

            “That was fast,” she commented.

“I hate to keep a beautiful woman waiting,” replied Tim.

Barb smiled as she lit her cigarette.  Tim motioned for the bar tender.  He gave another customer his beer before walking over to Tim.  They both ordered shots.

            “What’s your name?” she asked.

            “Tim.  What’s yours?”

            “Barb.”

Tim nodded as he did his shot.
